Atomium

Atomium
Brussels, 2006
For the Atomium, Ingo Maurer and his team created several new lighting objects and the interior lighting. The extraordinary building in Brussels was closed for renovation from 2003 till 2006.
„The Atomium is an absolutely unique building. I deeply respect those who planned and built it in 1958. With my lighting, I wish to serve the building and its character. I wanted to avoid intrusion with ‘design’ and trendiness. After meditating on this project, I decided to start off from my first impressions: a vivid emotional experience, a perception of being in an extraterrestrial vehicle. I consider it important to conserve the spirit of this space, the optimism and the belief in the future. In the Atomium, you still intend to fly to the moon.” of the nine spheres are accessible to visitors. With a diameter of 18 m each globe is divided into up to four levels and spaces for a variety of purposes. Accordingly, the lighting has to meet many different needs.
